Most people acknowledge that, along with the physical, emotional and mental attributes, being human also includes having a spiritual side to our lives. Spirituality goes beyond the here and now, and often includes a sense of something greater than ourselves, or a dissatisfaction within the soul that there is more to life than money and possessions. It is often characterised by the asking of the question: "What is my purpose in life?"
Christians believe that we have found the answer to that question through having a personal relationship with God. What does that mean?
For Christians, God is known and understood as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
As Father: God is love; God created the world out of love; God cares for his creation and for every human individual as a precious child.
As Son: God reveals himself to the world in the historical person of Jesus Christ. Through Jesus' life, death and resurrection, we have the key to knowing and loving God, and to making sense of life (both before and after death).
As Holy Spirit: God is alive and active today, inspiring faith, justice and truth through the guiding of his Spirit. God sustains the life of the world, and the fruit of his Spirit can be seen through the transforming of lives and communities.
Christians seek to understand and know God better through prayer, studying the Bible and meeting together for worship. Meeting together enables us to support one another, as we seek to deepen our own relationships with God, and follow the way that Jesus taught. Many Christians see the Church as their second family – whatever life throws at us, the people in our church will always be there to support us. |
