"Our Mission is to witness to Jesus as the Messiah and Son of the living God and to bring the good news of Jesus and our salvation to all in our community."
This next year is a very exciting one for St. Mark’s church. April 2009 marks the fiftieth anniversary of this church in our community of Biggin Hill.
The consecration of the church building was on Saturday 29th April 1959 and the bells rang out for the first time. Many local people still remember the 'Tin Tabernacle' which stood at the top of Pole Steeple Hill, and the exciting way the church was built from a disused church in Peckham. This was the vision of the Reverend Vivian Symonds, the then 'Perpetual Curate' of the parish.
As we have thought about our anniversary year, it was decided to create a new logo for the church. We have taken the symbol of St. Mark, a roaring lion, with a bible in its hand, as a symbol that the "lion is still roaring after fifty years," roaring with the urgency and zeal to spread the good news of God’s love to our community, here in Biggin Hill.
St. Marks continues to be a lively church existing to honour God through our worship, community life and mission.
During our anniversary year which runs from April 2009 until April 2010, a number of events have been organised, social events include a Male Voice Choir, a concert by the Sackville singers, a Jazz band, and also a family fun day. This year we will also be focusing on our spiritual life as a church family, reflecting on the past but also looking to where God will be leading us in the future, discerning where we can serve the people of Biggin Hill more effectively in the future.
We look forward to seeing you in the year ahead as we celebrate this special anniversary, and pray that this community will give thanks to God for all that he has done in the past and pray for the work and mission that is to be done in his name in the years to come.
